Department of Peace marches on!
Aug. 8th, 2007 09:04 pmWE DID IT! Our Portland City Council Resolution passed by unanimous vote this morning! Portland now becomes the 24th city (plus one tribal council) to pass a resolution in support of the legislation (HR #808) to create a US Department of Peace and Nonviolence within the federal government!
Special thanks to Adrienne Edwards for drafting the resolution, Heidi Henzel for getting us started, Mike Ferris for drafting our press release, Jackie Satchel, Rev. David Alexander, and Tam An Tran and others for their testimonials, Shannon Callahan and Sheila Pete from Commissioner Saltzman's office for their help and support, big thanks to Commissioner Dan Saltzman for his willingness to be our sponsor, and of course so many others who have contributed to this effort!
We will try to get pictures and video posted as soon as we can.
I am also told that Channel 30 will carry the Council session on the air, but I don't know what time or date. However, Shannon Callahan told me that portlandonline.com will have the session video posted in about a week for those who are interested in seeing it.
I am also forwarding congratulations sent by Dot Maver, executive director of the Peace Alliance for our success. Please see her email below.
Sincerely,
Ken Bryan
