"Sophia Meets Michael"
Adaptation of Herr Gottfried Johannes Muller’s Story of the Archangel Michael

Before Sophia was born on Earth; she found herself in a great hall, made of marble and elegantly decorated. Thousands of others joined her there and all gathered, naturally lined up in tight rows, as if prepared for examination. Sophia was smaller and shorter than most of the people there; statuesque women and men blocking her view from all sides.
A magnificent man came into the great hall; Sophia recognized Him as the Archangel Michael. Everybody suddenly hushed and snapped to attention.
“There is a battle coming on the Earth” Michael said. “It will be fought on the most subtle of spiritual levels, at first, eventually moving to coarser levels of reality. I am looking for people who are willing to go to Earth and battle for balance. Most of your work will be invisible and you will suffer great difficulties. You may be tortured, or nearly put to death; you may often wish for death. If you persevere, you will live with The Divine in your heart for all time. You will discover that a mere individual, through thought and deed, can create Paradise anywhere, at any time. If you do not volunteer for this mission, there will be no penalty or punishment and you will be allowed to stay here, on this plane of Time-Without-Time and enjoy the life you presently live. Though not very exciting, this plane will continue to sustain you, if that is your wish. Who will choose to volunteer?”
Sophia looked around. No one came forward, hardly anyone moved. How can this be, Sophia wondered, there are so many mighty and powerful beings here?
“Will anyone step forward?” Michael said, His voice now thundering.
The crowd remained motionless.
Michael raised His hand; light dancing off His metallic sword. “Then step back if you are unwilling to go with us!”
All around Sophia, people stepped back in one major rush. “How could anybody not want to live with The Divine?” she whispered as she stood in place.
All participants in Sophia’s line moved back a few yards except for her. She stood alone at the end of the hall, feeling full of adrenaline. She noticed someone moving to her right, as she turned her head and squinted. Down the row, a few hundred yards and so far away she couldn’t make out features, were other people who had not stepped back.
Michael looked at them and His face filled with love and compassion. “I will send you help and I will send you helpers, although they will usually be in disguise. But you will know the sound of the truth when you hear it. Always remember, no matter how terrible it gets, you are on a mission and your actions, if successful, will save humanity.” Michael paused, looking pleased. “Now I will tell you what your most powerful weapon is: committing tiny acts of compassion.”
As Sophia nodded in agreement, Michael struck her on the shoulder with His sword. She winced from the blow and began to cry and struggle, trying to speak. With a sudden inhalation of breath, Sophia realized she was now in the body of a newborn babe.
