Kathy Lee Gifford slams Pagans on Today Show
Thursday, June 26, 2008 8:30 AM

Dear All,

I received the following email today (please read below) from Ellen Evert Hopman and tracked down the clip on the Today Show website--where it is still up.  Check it out before NBC takes it down and please share!

Go to: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23713175

Click on "The Reception" link, and scroll up in the pop-up window and select "Who knew? Wedding traditions". Beginning at 4:17 in the clip you'll hear what she said for yourself.  Kathy Lee Gifford is hardly a 'heavy-weight', however, her unfortunate comments were shared with millions of Today Show viewers earlier today.  I support Ellen's suggestion of letting the Today Show know how you regard such comments.

Blessings,
Alana

All:
Please read the message below that I just sent to the Today Show. You can
follow up with an e:mail of your own today@nbc.com
Ellen

Today, June 25 at around 11:30 AM I was watching the Today show as I was
eating breakfast. Cathy Lee Gifford made a remark that REALLY upset me. So
much so that almost couldn't finish eating. She was discussing wedding rings
and why they are worn on the left hand, asking a gentleman to pick from
several options; A,B,C etc. which reason was the "real" reason. One of the
reasons had to do with Pagan beliefs. Out of her mouth came the words
"Pagans, those nasty bad Pagans". I just couldn't believe it.

I happen to BE a Pagan. there are many thousands, some say a million, of us
in the United States. We include Druids, Wiccans, Witches, Asatruar, Strega,
and many other denominations. We have ethics and we have deities, both male
and female, and we have strong religious beliefs and practices. I find this
kind of blatant hate mongering intolerable. It reflects the most uneducated,
ignorant bias that has been perpetrated on Pagans since the Inquisition
(remember that nasty little episode?).

Pagans are proud Americans, many of us are fighting and dying in Iraq and
Afghansitan, and we vote.

I demand an apology from Ms. Gifford on behalf of myself and all devout
Pagans in this country and elsewhere.

If you want to learn more about our beautiful religion please visit my
website (below) and the Shrine of the Goddess Brighid. Then decide if we are
"nasty and bad".

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I sent a letter to the Today show as well.

I am hoping that this email will be one of THOUSANDS that the Today show receives regarding Kathy Lee Gifford's hateful comments towards pagans.  "Nasty, Bad Pagans"?  You know what?  Ms. Gifford is a "Nasty Bad Christian"!  Jesus would never treat pagans that way.  He promotes love and treating your neighbors as you would yourself.  So, I guess that means that Ms. Gifford thinks she is a "nasty, bad person".

Pagans are in every country of the world.  We are flourishing here in the US.  We treat every religion with respect for we know that out of 6 billion people on the planet, there is room for ALL RELIGIOUS PRACTICES.

Please, tell Ms. Gifford to apologize.  We are strong and we KNOW how to network.  We will tell more and more of our brethren exactly what type of show the Today show is if you do not post a retraction.  Not to mention the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. who are on our side as well.  Boycotting products advertised on your show is an easy thing to do.

A retraction is the right thing to do.  We are a nation of FREEDOM OF RELIGION after all, right?

Sincerely,
Christina Taft
